Visiting Artist: Metroparks Brings Flower Pounding to WCA

This month’s Visiting Artist, Metropark, recently taught our artist-clients the ancient Japanese technique of flower pounding, also known as Tatakizome. This technique involves hammering fresh flowers onto paper, canvas or fabric to create stunning patterns. It’s a simple yet effective way to add a touch of nature to your artwork.

To begin, all you need are fresh flowers, a hammer and your desired surface to transfer the flower “dye” onto. Start by laying your chosen surface onto a flat surface and place your flowers on top. You can use a variety of flowers and colors for a more unique and vibrant result.

Using a hammer, gently pound the flowers, being careful not to apply too much force. The petals will transfer their natural pigment onto the surface, creating a beautiful, organic pattern. You can experiment with different hammering techniques to achieve different effects.

Despite the pounding of hammers, our artist-clients were able to create stunning artwork using this technique and seemed to genuinely have a good time. Flower pounding is a great way to incorporate the beauty of nature into your art and is perfect for creating one-of-a-kind pieces. We are thankful to Metroparks for introducing our artist-clients to another new way of artistic expression.
