That’s My Art!” – A Moment of Pride, A Mission in Motion

Hope takes many forms at We Care Arts—but few moments have captured it as clearly as the day Vanessa spotted her artwork hanging proudly on our wall.

She stopped in her tracks, eyes wide. “Is that mine?” she asked, wheeling closer with her voice filled with wonder. I checked the back—sure enough, her signature was there. “It is mine!” she beamed. “It looks so good!” With her shoulders back and chin high, she wondered if I could hand her HER masterpiece and asked if I would grab my camera and take this picture of her with her art. The pride radiating from her in that moment—it was beautiful.

Her piece came from Anthony D.’s class, where this year’s curriculum focused on studying the masters. His lesson on Cubism, inspired by Picasso, gave Vanessa and her peers the opportunity to stretch their creativity and confidence.

Vanessa’s story is a reminder of our mission in action: empowering healing through art and community. Every day, we nurture life skills, build confidence, and light the way toward new possibilities—individually and together.

As we move forward, may we carry that same pride and hope. Let’s rededicate ourselves to this work we share—to the art, to the empowerment of ourselves and others in a community where we see and cherish the value in every person.

Hope to see you at  The Evening at the Races this year April 25th (every year the full week Friday before the Kentucky Derby)!

Warmly,

Katie Neubert
Executive Director
