WCA Community Services

The ArtWORK program, provided at the Berkeley Center in Kettering, St. Mark Lutheran Church in Fairborn, Zion Church in Tipp City, and the Cherry Street Clubhouse in Eaton, uses art to teach and reinforce life skills. Key to the program is the opportunity for participants to profit from the work they produce. Please see our Location page for contact info and directions.

We Care Arts Decorative Painting

Decorative Painting

Our painting classes teach the techniques and tools for painting to achieve the desired results. Following instructions and learning new skills can be very helpful for stroke victims or others with memory issues. When clients sell the items they made, they are very proud and that helps build self-esteem and motivates an artist to continue their creative process.

Clay - We Care Arts

Clay

Our clay program provides our artists with the tools and instruction they need for making a ceramic piece of art from start to finish. Working with clay is, for many, a soothing and calming process, requiring patience and working with one’s hands. It is also beneficial for people with physical challenges, as using their hands promotes muscle development.

Computers at We Care Arts

Computers

Using our computers, artists are able to scan art that they have already created into the computer and manipulate the image without changing the original artwork. This image can be used to make greeting cards or can be digitally imprinted on mugs and coasters. Many of our physically challenged artists that have difficulty using standard art materials can create something beautiful by using a computer mouse and a paint program.

Sewing at We Care Arts

Sewing

The sewing area is one of the most active areas in our studio. They gather each week to sew, similar to old-time quilting bees. The most wonderful part of the sewing program is the socialization and support the participants get from each other. Many member of this group would be isolated at home if they didn’t have a place like this to get together and share their creativity.

Jewelry

Our jewelry program has been growing and is now expanded from weekly to twice a week. The artists gather and share ideas and materials while they talk and create. They get such a thrill when they make a beautiful piece of art and are even more thrilled when they see someone wearing it! They sometimes take jewelry from many different sources, take it apart, and reuse the beads in a new and beautiful piece.

WCA Fine Arts

Fine Arts

The fine arts program uses a variety of styles and media, including watercolor and oil paints, pastels, pencils and markers. Occasionally, they use the materials at the same time, on the same piece. This class is often about self-expression and exploration. It is also about healing and connecting. In the quiet studio in our back room, they listen to all kinds of music and share their lives and stories. The art is what bring them together each week.

WCA Visiting Artists

Visiting Artist

Our visiting artist classes are held once a month in the main studio. The different classes will use a variety of styles and mediums. We have done painting and drawing, fiber arts and ceramics, and silk scarves and fused glass jewelry. The classes are open to any of our active participants. The participants are exposed to something they may not have otherwise had a chance to try.
